Police officers of the year

What does a person have to do to earn this glamorous title? Well, it depends. A good arrest might do the trick. However, sometimes an arrest is not really necessary, as it turned out the other day.

We have a peculiar couple living next door. I won't go into a complete analysis now, but let me just say that they are hysterically panicky. Their biggest fear is that somebody will break in through the balcony while they are asleep. So, whenever the lights in the back yard turn on (we have lights in the back yard that have movement-sensors, so they turn on whenever somethig moves in the garden), they jump around like mad and don't go back to bed again until morning.

The other night we were up late so we noticed the lights turning on in the garden. Next, we heard wild movement next door. We wanted to know who was outside, so we went to the balcony and ... There they were! Not only one, but two of them, marching accross the lawn! We started laughing. My two hedgehogs (MacGyver and Pete) were running accross the lawn as they do every evening between 10 and 11 pm. Their movements turned on the lights and gave the neighbours a good fright! That sure makes Macky and Pety the police officers of the year in my book!

How delightful! Here in South Australia we have quite a collection of regular visitors to our "garden" (which is 5 acres or 2 hectares in size). We have regular visits from the introduced Brown Hare, Rabbit and Red Fox. Of the native Aussie species we have several species of bat, Brushtail Possums (who love to dance and thump on the roof at 2 a.m.), the occasional Echidna (an anteater) and Western Grey Kangaroo.

Possums! Lovely! :) I wish I had one of those in our garden. They are lovely animals!
Our garden is very small (just a patch of grass with a hedge around it) but we have quite a lot of little animals for its size: birds (all kinds of finches, collared doves - which are like pets to me because they come if I call them, sparrows, blackbirds, magpies, crows, owls, woodpeckers and other spieces, as well - it's kind of a bird-heaven and -haven if you want), 1 regularly-coming squirrel, a weasel, rabbits, hedgehogs, moles, field-mice and even a deer came once - although we live in the middle of the village! So, you see, it's quite lively if one knows how to observe :)

Please, do report on the animal-events in your garden regularly. It's so nice to read real stories from Down Under!

Yes - I'd be delighted to report on the wildlife happenings here in Murray Bridge South Australia (2 hours by plane west of Sydney then one hour east by car from Adelaide). Check my birding blog for reports of birds in our garden and nearby areas, including the Mighty Murray River (Australia's biggest and only thirty minutes walk from my home). Also check my Travel Blog for places I visit - often with birding in mind.
