Dan Reformacije / Reformation Day

Dan Reformacije

On 31st October the Slovenians celebrate Reformation Day. It's a very important day for us because we got our first books (that is, books written in Slovene) on this day in 1550. They were written by the first Slovenian writer Primož Trubar and were published in Tübingen. The books were called Katekizem and Abecednik. Trubar's wish and the reason for these two books were that all Slovenes would learn to read and write so that they could read The Bible (which, in Slovene, is called "Sveto pismo"). Later on, Trubar also translated the entire New Testament into Slovene and wrote about 25 more books.

31st October is a national holiday in Slovenia, so it's a bank holiday (=we don't go to work). Throughout the day there are various events around the country in celebration of Primož Trubar. Just as I'm writing this, I'm listening to a radio show about Trubar's life and work, too.

War-time Radio

Radio worms

This morning, I heard on the radio that it's 80 years since Radio Ljubljana (as it was called back then) started operating. That was back in 1928. In order to celebrate this anniversary, they made a short inquiry: people could call and tell about their most memorable moments with the radio. I didn't call, but while I was listening to the show, I started thinking about my radio memories... And I came up with my most memorable one: war-time radio (I was 7 years old back then). During the war for the independence of Slovenia in 1990, radio was the only portable source of news that we had and that we always took with us into the shelter during the air raids. The one thing that I remember the most has to do with the music that was on in that time. There were only 2 songs that they played over and over again: one was by a Slovene singer and the other one was Wind of Change by The Scorpions. I remember listening to the song on a small transistor I had with me and watching the "rain" of bombs falling just a few kilometres away from our village... Scary, but still beautiful memories of the time! Whatever one might think, these things were a part of my childhood and memories of those days are among my most cherished ones... Back then, I didn't quite grasp the seriousness of the situation and my most important concern was to protect and save my little blue parrot (budgerigar) :-)

So, I decided to post a photo on my Flickr site - in memory of those days! :-)

The Museum of Computers

Life made easy...

I had a lovely time today. I was kindly invited to join a group of students on a tour of the Museum of Computers in Kiberpipa cybercentre in Ljubljana. We listened to a lecture about the development of computers and afterwards, we could take a look around the museum. There were lovely examples of old computers there - and all of them working, so that we could try them out! The best part of the tour for me was when I learnt how to play games on an old Spectrum ZX, which I sort of inherited (together with a big box of games) from my uncle! So, I'm off now to use my newly acquired knowledge! :-)

Just another day...

I'm a virgin!

Speaking of my study-material, I would like to thank Rebecca Blood for a wonderful book called The Weblog Handbook! It's a splended little handbook, that gives you a whole new perspective on blogging. Thank you so much, Mrs. Blood, for writing it!!

After a hard day's work I was digging my photoarchives and found this lovely photo of a flower - click it to see it on my Flickr page. :-)

I'm off to watch Jericho now! After all, I deserve a nice, relaxing bed-time story (well, TV series in this case) ;-)

Early birthday present

Halva
Originally uploaded by Cobra_11

Just as I was pondering on where to get some, I glanced at a shelf where they have all sorts of chocolate delights... and there they were: the last two packets of halva!! And they were the XXL ones!! I grabbed them both and couldn't wait to get home to be able to taste them. Well, since my birthday is nearing with warp speed, I guess you could call this an early birthday present! :-)

That's art! ;-)

Artistic laundry
Originally uploaded by Cobra_11
I was hanging out the washing today and I was working so eagerly and devotedly, that I managed to do this: an artistic breaking of the blue peg. Now, is that art or is that art? :-D

Other than that, my day was devoted to studying for an upcoming exam. I have to write a paper and guess what I'll be writing about: BLOGS!! :-) Yes, that's right! So, at the moment, I'm so wrapped up in blogs that I hardly find the time to blog at all :-)

Pink

Pretty in Pink

Today was such a wonderful day. It was warm and sunny and I spent the whole afternoon sitting in the back yard, reading a book (funny enough, it was a book about blogs for a paper that I have to write) and just enjoying the sun! On my way back in I took the shot of this lovely pink rose.

Tomorrow, I'm invited to a family friend for roasted chestnuts! I can't wait to eat them for the first itme this year! :-)

I wish you all a pleasant start of the week! :-)

The Springs of Life

Rivers
Originally uploaded by Cobra_11
We had some rain this morning. When it stopped, I decided to go on a little "hunt" for the beautiful patterns that water can make. I found such delicate details on the leaves of some plants in the garden and I made some shots.

This one made me think about how precious water is... These little rivers are the springs of life! Every drop of water is important. It can give life to a living being. Many people around the world have no access to clean drinking water... Farms can't exist where there's no water... Life dies out if this precious liquid dries out...

We all use water every day, but never think how valuable it really is... It's becoming extremely scarce in some parts of the world, so those of us who have it in abundance, should learn to appreciate it more!

Autumn is here

Waking up

It's my favourite time of the year again! There's more than one reason for my love of autumn. First of all, the weather. I love the so called Indian summer! There's nothing mor beautiful than a long walk in the woods on a cold, but sunny autumn day. You can feast your eyes on such beautiful colours...

Then, there are the pumpkins :-) You'll probably laugh at my fondness of these round, orange fruits, but I can't help it! To cut out a scary face and then to put a candle into the pumpkin and light it up in the evening is simply magical :-)

Of course, there's my passion for photography. Autumn is such a lovely time to take shots. The sun has this warm light that, if you know how to use it to your advantage, can give the photos a special, soft touch. The effect of the sunlight coming through the colourful leaves of various trees is another favourite motive of mine :-)

And, last but no least, there's my birthday :-))) Yes, it's coming up very soon and I'm already all excited about it! But, there's still some time until THE day, so until then enjoy the photo of the horse chestnut I took earlier today and posted on my Flickr site.
